Dealing with Barriers - Doing the Big 5 isn't always easy

The following guide for overcoming barriers was created based on feedback from people who have used the Big 5.

How to Overcome Common Barriers to Using the Big 5

  1. Guilt. Some people feel that they don’t deserve to feel better. Show self-compassion – remember that when we are feeling down and stressed we often feel guilty or unworthy. That’s the symptoms talking – not you. You deserve to feel better. Be your own best friend, or at least, don’t sabotage yourself.

  2. Low-Self-Esteem. “I don’t deserve it” is something people say when they have low self-esteem. That’s the low mood talking – everyone deserves to do more of the Big 5.

  3. I’m Too Angry. Anger can be a great energiser, but avoid staying in that place for long. If you need to and can, channel that anger to help get you motivated to do one or two extra Big 5 actions each day.

  4. It’s Too Hard. Any activity feels hard when you are feeling low. But don’t try to go from zero to 100 overnight. Instead, just do one extra thing each day. It can be as simple as giving yourself permission to enjoy a short show or a favourite song. Then, give yourself permission to do another nice thing for yourself. In a few days you will already have ‘moved the dial’ and will probably be feeling more energy.

  5. I’m Tired and Need to Rest. Short periods of rest (1-2 days) is okay, but our results show that anymore can make people feel worse. And the less we do, the harder things feel.

  6. I’ll Get Better Naturally. Maybe you will, but you might feel worse. The Big 5 isn’t about changing your life or your personality, it’s about doing more of the things that are good for you. f course you are – you are unique. But, just like breathing and eating, we believe the Big 5 are things that everyone needs to do. And, the vast majority of people are already doing the Big 5 – the magic is making sure that you do them enough.

  7. I’m Different. Of course you are – you are unique. But, just like breathing and eating, we believe the Big 5 are things that everyone needs to do. And, the vast majority of people are already doing the Big 5 – the magic is making sure that you do them enough.

  8. I Already Do Other Things. Great, if they work for you, fantastic. But, if not, or you feel you want to try the Big 5, please do so. You can always keep doing what you are already doing, but add the Big 5.
